Why are we seeing so many polarizing arguments and debates, particularly online? In this video, Jake Wiskerchen attempts to answer that question through the lens of the five ethical principles: autonomy, justice, non-maleficence, beneficence, and fidelity.
Ultimately, we believe people on either side of a polarizing argument (for example, mandating masks in schools) are acting in good faith according to one or multiple ethical principles. These ethical codes are constantly in tension with each other, so by adhering to one strongly, you may compromise another. Conflict arises because each "side" strongly believes they are following their moral compass.
So how do we resolve conflict? Dialogue! By being aware of what's guiding your decision-making, we can be aware of what might be guiding someone else's decision-making.
